MINSK, 17 September (BelTA) – Medical education in Belarus meets international standards, said Professor of Clinical Anesthesiology, co-head of the anesthesiology and critical care department of the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences Vladimir Zelman, MD. He has read a lecture for students and staff of Vitebsk State Medical University, BelTA has learnt. The famous scientist toured the university and was introduced to its staff. The 73-year old academician told reporters that if he could start his medical education again, he would choose the Vitebsk-based university. “The university has a wonderful atmosphere; it takes advantage of modern information technologies and distance learning solutions. The education is up to world-class standards,” Vladimir Zelman said. He believes that scientists from various countries should communicate more to share best practices. He thinks that researchers from the former USSR republics, including Belarus, should be actively involved in the creation of the Skolkovo Innovation Center. In Vitebsk the American scientist read the lecture about genome medicine. The university often invites foreign scientists to read lectures. Last year medical professionals from Russia, Italy, Germany and Israel shared their expertise and knowledge with students of Vitebsk State Medical University. Several weeks before a seminar was held by Professor Stephen Tyring from the University of Texas Medical School. The university has seven departments. Over 6,000 students and trainees from 22 countries worldwide study there.
