Belarus, Indonesia agree on cooperation in science and technology

MINSK, 3 December (BelTA) - Belarus and Indonesia plan to develop cooperation in science and technology. Possible joint projects were discussed at a meeting between Deputy Prime Minister of Belarus Vladimir Semashko and Chairman of the Indonesian Institute of Sciences Lukman Hakim in Minsk. According to the First Deputy Premier, Belarus has a strong scientific-technical and production potential and is interested in partnership with Indonesia. Belarus’ economy is quite dynamic. Every five years the GDP increases by an average of 1.5 times. “Our science has been successful, particularly in agriculture. We have fully solved the problem of food security, with food becoming one of the major export items,” Vladimir Semashko said. This year, the export of agricultural products is expected to reach $5 billion. By 2015, this volume should grow to $8-8.5 billion. Belarus offers Indonesia its developments and technologies in the agricultural sector, and invites to cooperation in machine building, including in agricultural machinery. Moreover, Belarusian scientists are willing to cooperate with their Indonesian counterparts in the field of bio-and nano-technology, pharmacology, laser technology, space industry. "Indonesia is one of the fastest growing economies. We have much to share with each other,” said Vladimir Semashko. The National Academy of Sciences of Belarus will host a ceremony of signing a memorandum of understanding between the Indonesian Institute of Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus in the field of scientific and technological cooperation. All in all, Belarusian scientists have offered Indonesian colleagues more than 30 projects for joint implementation in the various fields of science and technology. According to Mr Lukman Hakim, Indonesia is a fast-growing economy with big mineral resources. Experts predict that by 2030, the state will become the seventh largest economy in the world. Indonesia is interested in scientific and technical cooperation with Belarus. Cooperation priorities are agriculture and engineering. The parties are also looking into partnership opportunities in the field of bio-and nano-technologies, space exploration.
