Belarusian Internal Affairs Ministry, border service, IOM to help foreigners return home

The Internal Affairs Ministry, the State Border Committee of Belarus, and the representative office of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) intend to sign a protocol of intent to cooperate in the voluntary return of foreign citizens to home countries or to permanent-residence countries, representatives of the Information and Public Relations Office of the Belarusian Internal Affairs Ministry told BelTA.

The event will herald the launch of an information campaign designed to raise awareness about the program on voluntary return for migrants. Assisted by the IOM, the voluntary return will include administrative assistance, logistic and financial aid, including for the sake of reintegration in the home country.

A similar program was implemented in Belarus in 2007-2011. Back then assistance was provided to over 140 foreigners. Of them 35 foreigners used assistance of the Internal Affairs Ministry. It saved a lot of state budget money, which would have been spent on deportation otherwise.

As many as 15 migrants have already used the opportunities the voluntary return program offers this year.

The protocol of intent to cooperate was developed as part of the international technical aid project designed to help Belarus resolve problems relating to the rising number of irregular migrants. The protocol stipulates criteria, conditions, and authority of the signatories.
