The number of cybercrimes in the financial sector increased substantially in the last few years. Chairman of the Board of the National Bank of the Republic of Belarus (NBRB) Pavel Kallaur made the statement during a joint session of the House of Representatives and the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus on 19 April, BelTA has learned.

Pavel Kallaur said: “Considerable attention is paid to cybersecurity since the number of cybercrimes in the financial sector increased substantially in the last few years. Most of them rely on social engineering: citizens are tricked into giving malicious actors information for accessing their accounts.”

This is why in 2022 the central bank teamed up with law enforcement agencies to launch a massive campaign designed to raise the nation's awareness about modern methods and ways of committing cybercrimes and the measures meant to prevent them. “Requirements for ensuring the protection of information and ensuring cybersecurity during the provision of payment services have been stipulated. Work is in progress to organize interaction between the National Bank, commercial banks, and other government agencies for the sake of counteracting cybercrimes,” the official noted.
