On-site meetings seen as good opportunity for MPs to assess legislative impact

Meetings of MPs in the regions, especially in frontier regions, are a good opportunity to learn more of the problems on the ground and see how previously adopted decisions work in practice, Chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State of Belarus and Russia, Chairman of the State Duma of the Russian Federation Vyacheslav Volodin said at a meeting of the 64th session of the Parliamentary Assembly, which was held in Vitebsk, BelTA has learned.

Vyacheslav Volodin noted that this practice has already proven itself: "This makes it possible to get better acquainted with the problems, to see how the decisions we made previously work in practice. I hope that this will make our work more effective."

He emphasized that at such meetings, MPs discuss the topics of mutually beneficial cooperation, the common legal framework that will be conducive to business of both countries.

The MPs considered the development of the common transport system, talked over the various issues with which citizens turn to government representatives, and also determined the topics that should be submitted for government discussion. Vyacheslav Volodin stressed that for Vitebsk Oblast, which is a transport hub, all these issues are important and relevant.

Reports on the budget of the Union State, adjustments and amendments to it were also considered.

Regarding the renovation and improvement of monuments dedicated to the soldiers and victims of the Second World War, Vyacheslav Volodin noted that the issue of historical memory will be on the agenda of more than one meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly. "This topic will be a strategic and priority one for us in years to come. We must cherish the memory of our grandfathers, great-grandfathers, remember the price of the Victory, and do everything to preserve the legacy of the fallen heroes," he stressed.

The next, 65th, session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State of Belarus and Russia will be held in one of the Russian frontier regions.
