The Belarusian People's Congress will take decisions that will shape the country's future, so there should not be random people there, Chairwoman of the Belarusian Women's Union Olga Shpilevskaya said on the air of the STV channel, BelTA informs.

The participants of the TV show noted that during the discussion of the bill on the Belarusian People's Congress, there was fear that the congress will include a great number of high-ranking officials. The president warned against this. He set the task to take all opinions on board and to include representatives of the public and labor collectives in the congress. Thus, there will be equal representation of civil society, deputies of various levels and ex officio representatives.

Olga Shpilevskaya noted that today it does not make much sense to set apart executives and ordinary people, because a unique system has been created when even the highest branches of power are made of representatives of people. “First of all, the president warned against bureaucratization of this body,” the Belarusian Women's Union chair emphasized. “The Belarusian People's Congress should have a balanced composition and consist of people who, at some point, will make a fateful decision for the entire nation and the state as a whole. Therefore, it is crucially important who will become delegates of the congress. It must include people who are able to take responsibility. It is not enough just to want to become a delegate, you also need to be a leader that people will follow. Only in this case can you be honored to join the Belarusian People's Congress,” she said.

The Belarusian Women's Union has more than 140,000 members, and the number of people wishing to join the organization is constantly growing. Even the non-public sector related to business and individual entrepreneurship have about 5,000 grassroots organizations. Along with other public associations which number exceeds 100,000 people, the Belarusian Women's Union will also receive the right to represent the interests of civil society. This represents an earnest approach to the composition of the Belarusian People's Congress and, according to Olga Shpilevskaya, is an additional measure of responsibility.

“The Belarusian People's Congress should be treated not just as a meeting of people who make certain decisions,” she stressed. “Pivotal decisions will be made, so there should not be random people there. Public associations which number exceeds 100,000 people have already established themselves, they have their own civic position. Moreover, they represent people from all walks of life,” Olga Shpilevskaya said.
