It is necessary to change approaches to housing provision in the country, Belarusian Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko said at a government meeting, BelTA has learned.

 “Today we are discussing a very pressing topic that concerns most of the country’s residents. We are experiencing certain difficulties with housing construction, especially subsidized housing. It is not because we cannot build more. Apparently, the mechanisms of providing state support are no longer relevant,” said Roman Golovchenko. 

The prime minister expressed concern about the emerging trends in the construction industry, which can affect efforts to achieve all the goals of the housing construction program. “The primary reason is the refusal of people entitled to subsidized housing to buy such housing. We offer subsidies, but people simply refuse to use them under existing terms. Although the construction pace is increasing, the waiting list of people in need of better housing is reducing at a slow pace. At the same time, the number of young families without children or with one child on the waiting list is growing (let me remind you that subsidies are provided only to families with at least two children), so is the number of other groups of people who are not entitled to subsidies and cannot afford buying a home using solely their own money,” he noted.

 “All these trends and the importance of the issue prompt us to revise approaches to providing people with housing,” the head of government emphasized.
