National Statistical Committee reveals Belarus' main export items

Deputy Chairman of the National Statistical Committee of Belarus Timofei Zhigarev told BelTA what products Belarus exports.

Timofei Zhigarev took part in a discussion of Belarus' economic performance over the years of its sovereignty. He spoke about the country's place in the world and the CIS by its main exports, territory and population.

Timofei Zhigarev noted that the equipment and electronics produced in Belarus can be found on all continents of the globe. Belarus is one of the world's leading producers of heavy vehicles, tractors, potash fertilizers. National dairy brands are widely known far beyond the republic. Belarus also boasts innovative products and solutions in many fields: electric buses, robotic mining equipment, new generation medicines and high-precision equipment, as well as the first Belarusian nuclear power plant. According to him, innovative products account for the fifth of revenues received by Belarusian enterprises.

“Belarus is the world's 84th largest country by area and 97th by population. Belarus is the sixth largest CIS member state by area and seventh by population. We are not a small country. As far as economy is concerned, Belarus is the world's third biggest exporter of potash fertilizers. In 2021 we were ninth in terms of dairy products and 19th in terms of strawberries. We are in the top 20 exporters of rapeseed,” said Timofei Zhigarev. Belarus is also in the top 20 world exporters of tractors, and in 2021, it was the world's 5th biggest exporter of flax and linen fabrics and 8th biggest exporter of rapeseed oil.

According to the deputy chairman of the National Statistical Committee, such figures were achieved due to a fairly strong agriculture. “It is not for nothing that the head of state pays so much attention to this sector despite criticism. He set the right goals and objectives to promote and support agriculture,” he noted.

Belarus has self-sufficient agricultural production and fully meets its domestic needs for staple foods. “The country produces enough potatoes and vegetables to fully meet domestic needs; we make over 2.5 times more milk and 1.3 times more meat and eggs than we consume, which also allows maintaining the country's export potential in the food market,” he noted.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), for many years Belarus has been one of the top five producers of flax fiber, rye, triticale, one of the top ten producers of cranberries, one of the top twenty producers of sugar beet, rapeseed, potatoes, oats, and strawberries.
